Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the social and economic upheavals that characterized the nineteenth century, the border-bending nosferatu embodied the period’s fears as well as its forbidden desires. This volume looks at both the range among and legacy of vampires in the nineteenth century, including race, culture, social upheaval, gender and sexuality, new knowledge and technology. The figure increased in popularity throughout the century and reached its climax in Dracula (1897), the most famous story of bloodsuckers. This book includes chapters on Bram Stoker’s iconic novel, as well as touchstone texts like John William Polidori’s The Vampyre (1819) and Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla (1872), but it also focuses on the many “Other” vampire stories of the period. Topics discussed include: the long-war veteran and aristocratic vampire in Varney; the vampire as addict in fiction by George MacDonald; time discipline in Eric Stenbock’s Studies of Death; fragile female vampires in works by Eliza Lynn Linton; the gender and sexual contract in Mary Elizabeth Braddon’s “Good Lady Ducayne;” cultural appropriation in Richard Burton’s Vikram and the Vampire; as well as Caribbean vampires and the racialized Other in Florence Marryat’s The Blood of the Vampire. While drawing attention to oft-overlooked stories, this study ultimately highlights the vampire as a cultural shape-shifter whose role as “Other” tells us much about Victorian culture and readers’ fears or desires.

Book excerpt: This book presents serious academic scholarship on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It differs from other works because it uses Buffy as a primary text and not as a secondary instrument to explore other concepts. In doing so, it demonstrates that popular culture studies should be approached with the same serious attention that is paid to classic philosophy and other long-established fields. Essays assemble the Buffy canon and explore how Buffy treats Shakespeare, comics, power, sisterhood, apocalyptic revisionism, folklore, feminism, redemption, patriarchy, identity and education. Book excerpt: If Christ had not risen from the dead, if God's plan for redemption had ended at the cross, what would our faith look like? Have we become so fixated on the cross that we have lost an understanding of the centrality of the resurrection? And if we ignore the resurrection, what effect does that have on our worldview, our evangelism, and our Christian practice? In The Cross Is Not Enough, Ross Clifford and Philip Johnson explore how the resurrection of Christ has been understood in times past and restore this linchpin doctrine to its rightful place as the basis of our hope, our worldview, and the way we live our lives. They compare Christianity's unique understanding of resurrection to other world religions and explore why the resurrection connects so readily with the human psyche. Pastors, teachers, students, and anyone involved in ministry will benefit from this insightful and engaging treatment of Christianity's most important doctrine.

Book excerpt: The Gothic Wanderer Rises Eternal in Popular Literature From the horrors of sixteenth century Italian castles to twenty-first century plagues, from the French Revolution to the liberation of Libya, Tyler R. Tichelaar takes readers on far more than a journey through literary history. The Gothic Wanderer is an exploration of man's deepest fears, his eff orts to rise above them for the last two centuries, and how he may be on the brink finally of succeeding. Tichelaar examines the figure of the Gothic wanderer in such well-known Gothic novels as "The Mysteries of Udolpho," "Frankenstein," and "Dracula," as well as lesser known works like Fanny Burney's "The Wanderer," Mary Shelley's "The Last Man," and Edward Bulwer-Lytton's "Zanoni." He also finds surprising Gothic elements in classics like Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities" and Edgar Rice Burroughs' "Tarzan of the Apes." From Matthew Lewis' "The Monk" to Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight," Tichelaar explores a literary tradition whose characters refl ect our greatest fears and deepest hopes. Readers will find here the revelation that not only are we all Gothic wanderers--but we are so only by our own choosing. Acclaim for "The Gothic Wanderer" ""The Gothic Wanderer" shows us the importance of its title figure in helping us to see our own imperfections and our own sometimes contradictory yearnings to be both unique and yet a part of a society. Book excerpt: Business Planning: Financing the Start-Up Business and Venture Capital Financing, Third Edition uses a simulated deal format that is drawn from the “deal-files” of real world practicing lawyers. It integrates the teaching of transactional lawyering skills with the presentation of new substantive law that is critical to the success of a junior corporate lawyer practicing in a transactional setting. The book gives students an overview of the range of substantive law that lawyers representing new businesses need to be versed in. To bridge the gap between law school and practice, the authors integrate excerpts from sources authored by experienced practitioners, thus bringing practical and real-world insights to students. Shannon Treviño joins as co-author on the new edition. Key Features: Integrated teaching of transactional lawyering skills with the presentation of substantive law that is critical to the success of a junior corporate lawyer practicing in a transactional setting. Analysis of both the legal issues and the business considerations that must be taken in to account in planning the structure and negotiating the terms of a capital raising transaction for an early stage company. A simulated deal format to provide a real-world appreciation of the “life cycle of a deal,” with a new simulated client whose business is focused on addressing a need in the autonomous vehicle industry, which presents a timely topic for faculty to engage with students on at every juncture of the course. Graded memo assignments that are representative of the work assignments expected of a junior corporate lawyer practicing in a transactional setting and that relate directly to the substantive material that is part of the casebook reading assignments. A thoroughly revised Chapter 4 regarding federal securities laws, incorporating numerous legislative changes that have been adopted or have become effective since the publication of the second edition. Significant additions to Chapter 8, including an updated overview of venture capital and a broader discussion of the capital formation process prior to venture capital financing.

Book excerpt: Glover's efforts reveal a writer who was more wide-ranging and politically engaged than his current reputation suggests. An Irish Protestant and nationalist, Stoker nonetheless drew his political inspiration from English liberalism at a time of impending crisis, and the tradition's contradictions and uncertainties haunt his work. At the heart of Stoker's writing Glover exposes a preoccupation with those sciences and pseudosciences - from physiognomy and phrenology to eugenics and sexology - that seemed to cast doubt on the liberal faith in progress. He argues that Dracula should be read as a text torn between the stances of the colonizer and colonized, unable to accept or reject the racialized images of backwardness that dogged debates about Irish nationhood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-three essays by young professional philosophers examine crucial ethical and metaphysical aspects of the Buffyverse (the world of Buffy). Though the show already attracted much scholarly attention, this is the first book to fully disinter the intellectual issues. Designed by Whedon as a multilevel story with most of its meanings deeply buried in heaps of heavy irony, Buffy the Vampire Slayer has replaced The X-Files as the show that explains to Americans the nature of the powerful forces of evil continually threatening to surge into our world of everyday decency and overwhelm it. In the tradition of the classic horror films Buffy the Vampire Slayer addresses ethical issues that have long fascinated audiences. This book draws out the ethical and metaphysical lessons from a pop-culture phenomenon.

Book excerpt: "This pioneering collection sheds new light on what happens when television's familiar crime procedural lures us down a dark alley resistant to ordered understanding. Wielding an impressive array of critical approaches, Policing the Monstrous traces the shifting paradox of logical crime solving and elements of myth, magic, and the supernatural often embedded in the crime. As screens continue to showcase the "Stranger Things" happening across "Lovecraft Country," this useful volume investigates a hybrid television genre that subverts convention to pose profound questions of moral ballast and human failing."--Christine A. Jackson, professor emeritus, Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, author of The Tell-Tale Art: Poe in Modern Popular Culture. This collection of new essays examines how the injection of supernatural creatures and mythologies transformed the hugely popular crime procedural television genre. These shows complicate the predictable and comforting patterns of the procedural with the inherently unknowable nature of the supernatural. From Sherlock to Supernatural, essays cover a range of topics including the gothic, the post-structural nature of The X-Files, the uncanny lure of Twin Peaks, trickster detectives, forensic fairy tales, the allure of the vampire detective, and even the devil himself.

Book excerpt: Contemporary American horror literature for children and young adults has two bold messages for readers: adults are untrustworthy, unreliable and often dangerous; and the monster always wins (as it must if there is to be a sequel). Examining the young adult horror series and the religious horror series for children (Left Behind: The Kids) for the first time, and tracing the unstoppable monster to Seuss’s Cat in the Hat, this book sheds new light on the problematic message produced by the combination of marketing and books for contemporary American young readers.
