Book excerpt: Jim Braddock, a successful surgeon practicing in San Francisco is married to Gretchen whom he met in Germany. It is 1982 and everything seems to be going smoothly in his life. Their son, Steve, is in his senior year of high school and is aiming to follow in his fathers footsteps. His wife is interested in metaphysics, claims she believes in reincarnation, and studies theosophy. Jim looks askance on her preoccupation and dismisses it as a fad. Unexpectedly, he suffers a serious heart attack, is rushed to the hospital and while his colleagues frantically work to save him, he is thrust into a near death experience. In it, he meets his long dead professor who shows him several episodes from two of Jims previous lives, one in 1715 France and the other in 1881 Russia. He meets the woman he loves in both incarnations and through a series of dramatic events learns that his behavior has caused inevitable consequences in each of his succeeding lives. He recovers a wiser and better man and takes his wife on a second honeymoon, humbly grateful for being given another chance at life. Tragedy strikes unexpectedly and leaves the family shattered. But after several years, his son, who is now a physician himself, married, and is expecting a child, hears his fathers story and is stunned by what he learns. A strange event occurs, and the drama unfolds to a remarkable conclusion.

Book excerpt: December 1941, Pearl Harbor. A peaceful Sunday morning turns into a devastating attack on American soil. Naval officer Malcolm “Mac” Kelsey is severely wounded while defending his ship. A flawed man abandoned long ago by his alcoholic wife, Kelsey has been mired in despair and hopelessness following the accidental death of Lucy, the young daughter he considers the only redemptive aspect of his life. Near the point of death, Kelsey is brought to what he believes to be an afterlife where he is offered an opportunity to shed his past memories and embark upon an alternate path in another place and time. Eager to escape his torment and begin a more tranquil existence, Kelsey accepts, only to feel quickly betrayed as he soon finds himself back in the midst of battle, this time as a Union soldier at the dawn of the Civil War. Through Antietam, Gettysburg and four years of relentless fighting, Kelsey attempts to cast aside his painful past while trying to survive the horrors of combat. He crosses paths with compelling figures on both sides of the conflict determined to persevere and return to those they left behind. Each will endure unimaginable hardship and will find their strength and resolve tested as they search for self-purpose, humanity, and reconciliation. Most of all, Mac Kelsey will discover the very essence of life and death, and whether the new beginning he has long coveted will bring him the inner peace he has so desperately sought. “Readers will find themselves immersed in this story and captivated by its principal characters.” —James M. McPherson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom and The War That Forged a Nation

Book excerpt: So, we are here. What happens once we die? Is there an afterlife? Is there eternity? Where is it? How is it? Do we really live for ever? Somehow, deep down, we know there is more and wonder what will happen to us after leaving this world. Stories from the Other Side is based on Anny's numerous encounters with the dead that have occurred during hypnotherapy sessions. Based on the information Anny has collected from these spirits, she decided to shed light on what happens after we die. By making them talk about themselves, Anny learned the experience is not about bright lights, heaven, hell and the like. Transcripts of conversations with spirits do reveal what happens next. Join Anny as she shares fascinating real life stories from the ones who passed to the next plane.

Book excerpt: It was my hope in writing this that it be informative, educational, entertaining, and hopefully inspirational. With family history starting prior to my arrival on the scene, it spans nearly 100 years. It describes different times and faraway places. To the older generation it may bring back the past with an occasional side trip down memory lane. To the younger generation it is my desire that they might glean something from my experiences, that will be helpful to them. This is my story, I enjoyed writing it, and hope my readers enjoy it as well.

Book excerpt: Reveals the troubling intimacy between Black women and the making of US global power The year 1968 marked both the height of the worldwide Black liberation struggle and a turning point for the global reach of American power, which was built on the counterinsurgency honed on Black and other oppressed populations at home. The next five decades saw the consolidation of the culture of the American empire through what Erica R. Edwards calls the “imperial grammars of blackness.” This is a story of state power at its most devious and most absurd, and, at the same time, a literary history of Black feminist radicalism at its most trenchant. Edwards reveals how the long war on terror, beginning with the late–Cold War campaign against organizations like the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense and the Black Liberation Army, has relied on the labor and the fantasies of Black women to justify the imperial spread of capitalism. Black feminist writers not only understood that this would demand a shift in racial gendered power, but crafted ways of surviving it. The Other Side of Terror offers an interdisciplinary Black feminist analysis of militarism, security, policing, diversity, representation, intersectionality, and resistance, while discussing a wide array of literary and cultural texts, from the unpublished work of Black radical feminist June Jordan to the memoirs of Condoleezza Rice to the television series Scandal. With clear, moving prose, Edwards chronicles Black feminist organizing and writing on “the other side of terror”, which tracked changes in racial power, transformed African American literature and Black studies, and predicted the crises of our current era with unsettling accuracy.

Christie Wilkie-Stibbs draws upon the work of Luce Irigaray, Helene Cixous, Julia Kristeva, and Jacques Lacan in her analysis of particular children's literature texts to demonstrate how a feminist analysis opens up textual possibilities that may be applied to works of children's fiction in general, extending the range of textual engagements in children's literature through the application of a new poststructural critical apparati.

Dick and Ex Machina. What if every possibility of every life were within your reach? Vin, a down-on-his-luck young tech entrepreneur forced out of the software company he started, takes a job house-sitting an ultramodern Seattle mansion whose owner has gone missing. There he discovers a secret basement lab with an array of computers and three large, smooth caskets. Inside one he finds a woman in a state of suspended animation. There is also a dog-eared notebook filled with circuit diagrams, beautiful and intricate drawings of body parts, and pages of code. When Vin decides to enter one of the caskets himself, his reality begins to unravel, and he finds himself on a terrifying journey that raises fundamental questions about reality, free will, and the meaning of a human life.

Book excerpt: How New York’s Lower East Side inspired new ways of seeing America New York City's Lower East Side, long viewed as the space of what Jacob Riis notoriously called the "other half," was also a crucible for experimentation in photography, film, literature, and visual technologies. This book takes an unprecedented look at the practices of observation that emerged from this critical site of encounter, showing how they have informed literary and everyday narratives of America, its citizens, and its possible futures. Taking readers from the mid-nineteenth century to the present, Sara Blair traces the career of the Lower East Side as a place where image-makers, writers, and social reformers tested new techniques for apprehending America—and their subjects looked back, confronting the means used to represent them. This dynamic shaped the birth of American photojournalism, the writings of Stephen Crane and Abraham Cahan, and the forms of early cinema. During the 1930s, the emptying ghetto opened contested views of the modern city, animating the work of such writers and photographers as Henry Roth, Walker Evans, and Ben Shahn. After World War II, the Lower East Side became a key resource for imagining poetic revolution, as in the work of Allen Ginsberg and LeRoi Jones, and exploring dystopian futures, from Cold War atomic strikes to the death of print culture and the threat of climate change. How the Other Half Looks reveals how the Lower East Side has inspired new ways of looking—and looking back—that have shaped literary and popular expression as well as American modernity.
