Book excerpt: The Disobedient Generation collects newly written autobiographies by an international cross-section of well-known sociologists, all of them "children of the '60s". It illuminates the human experience of living through that decade as apprentice scholars and activists, encountering the issues of class, race, the Establishment, the decline of traditional religion, feminism, war, and the sexual revolution. In each case the interlinked crises of young adulthood, rapid change, and nascent professional careers shaped this generation's private and public selves.

Book excerpt: Contemporary scholars of Chinese philosophy often presuppose that early China possessed a naturalistic worldview, devoid of any non-natural concepts, such as transcendence. Challenging this presupposition head-on, Joshua R. Brown and Alexus McLeod argue that non-naturalism and transcendence have a robust and significant place in early Chinese thought. This book reveals that non-naturalist positions can be found in early Chinese texts, in topics including conceptions of the divine, cosmogony, and apophatic philosophy. Moreover, by closely examining a range of early Chinese texts, and providing comparative readings of a number of Western texts and thinkers, the book offers a way of reading early Chinese Philosophy as consistent with the religious philosophy of the East and West, including the Abrahamic and the Brahmanistic religions. Co-written by a philosopher and theologian, this book draws out unique insights into early Chinese thought, highlighting in particular new ways to consider a range of Chinese concepts, including tian, dao, li, and you/wu.

Book excerpt: The "1.5 generation" (Ilchom ose) refers to Koreans who immigrated to the United States as children. Unlike their first-generation parents and second-generation children born in the United States, 1.5ers have been socialized in both Korean and American cultures and express the cultural values and beliefs of each. In this first extended look at the 1.5 generation in Hawaii, Mary Yu Danico attempts to fill a void in the research by addressing the social process through which Korean children are transformed from immigrants into 1.5ers. Dozens of informal, in-depth interviews and case studies provide rich data on how family, community, and economic and political factors influence and shape Korean and Korean American identity in Hawaii. Danico examines the history of Koreans in Hawaii, their social characteristics, and current demographics. Her close consideration of socio-cultural influences firmly establishes the 1.5 generation in the mainstream discussion of identity formation and race relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the social attitudes that distinguish today's youth from their predecessors, identifies the sources of these attitudes in the social experiences of today's youth, and analyzes the stereotype implied in the term "Anti-American Generation." These essays show clearly that the issue between the dissenting, primarily middle-class youth and their elders and most of the working class (regardless of age) is a difference of opinion not about Americanism but about moral behavior and the scope of moral judgment. What distinguishes the generations is not so much their feelings about their country, as' their feelings about what people should do about their feelings and the role feelings should have in the conduct of one's life. The attitudes of the young are largely in conflict with an older cultural tradition that promotes the subordination of impulse and personal conviction to rational control for the sake of common purposes and future acceptability and effectiveness.

Book excerpt: The time frame is June through September of 1863. The characters were real people. The story follows the lives of five men who defended their homeland in America’s most costly war. The novel is set in Northwest Georgia. A heavily researched book about brave people making their way through impossible circumstances, and about families torn apart. Their lives were not easy, and this event made life unbearable, and impossible to stay in their homes. The main character, Spillbsy Dyer, at thirty-five had to remain faithful in his duty as an officer, and resist the temptation to desert the Army, knowing his nearby family was in harm’s way. Other characters were part of a mass movement by rail, of troops stationed in Richmond, Virginia and transported to Northern Georgia. They were among the ones who historian Mary Chesnut wrote about when she recorded, “At Kingsville, N.C., I caught a glimpse of our army. God Bless these brave fellows. Not one man intoxicated, not one rude word did I hear. It was a strange sight. Miles of platform cars-soldiers rolled in their blankets, lying in rows, heads covered and fast asleep. In their gray blankets, packed in regular order, they looked like swathed mummies. All these fine fellows going to kill or be killed. Why?” These men were part of the 132,000 soldiers who descended on the farm land of Northwestern Georgia, from all areas of this young country, in the drought ridden summer of 1863.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a complete blueprint for managing and leading the millennial generation. As we continue to take over the workforce, leaders should begin to understand what makes millennials tick and why we are so different than any other generation to come before and after. Why are millennials called lazy or entitled? What motivated millennials? How has social media transformed our way of thinking? Millennial Influence covers all of the questions and more while offering the reader some history and actionable strategies to enable them to understand better and guide millennials. For millennials looking to increase their influence, there is information on how millennial can better communicate, relate, and interact with other generations to increase work productivity. Millennial Influence is an excellent book for a light Sunday or lunch break read. "As the first book in this series, my focus was on providing insight that both millennials and other generations could use, today," says D'Vaughn Bell. He explains how his motivation for the book stems from "not spending a minute in college" and his thirst for entrepreneurship. "Entrepreneurship grants us more failures than any job ever will. This ideology is why entrepreneurs make for better business coaches and consultants. I want my book to inspire anyone looking to start a business or exceed on the corporate ladder. I may not have the experience of working directly 'for' but have worked directly 'with' many companies of all sizes." Aside from being the first generation of digital influencers, millennials are tech-savvy, constructive feedback thirsty little machines. Once business leaders and managers can grasp this concept, they can craft dominating workforces of a success-driven generation. There's a common misconception that millennials are lazy. "We're not lazy, we're just more aware of what is possible and aren't settling for social security, pension, 401K, a wide, dog, and a white picket fence." Grab your digital copy of Millennial Influence and leverage a proven way to manage, lead, and work with the different generations in the workplace.
