Book excerpt: This book presents current advances in the emerging interdisciplinary field of microRNA research of human cancers from a unique perspective of quantitative sciences: bioinformatics, computational and systems biology, and mathematical modeling. This volume contains adaptations and critical reviews of recent state-of-the-art studies, ranging from technological advances in microRNA detection and profiling, clinically oriented microRNA profiling in several human cancers, to a systems biology analysis of global patterns of microRNA regulation of signaling and metabolic pathways. Interactions with transcription factor regulatory networks and mathematical modeling of microRNA regulation are also discussed.

Book excerpt: The topics in this volume explore the etiology, cellular mechanisms, epidemiology, genetics, models and potential therapeutic measures for the blinding diseases of retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration. Special focus is highlighted in the areas of Mechanisms of Photoreceptor Degeneration and Cell Death (extremely important because very little is known how or why photoreceptors die in these diseases, despite an abundance of genetic information), Age-Related Macular Degeneration (with several novel approaches to its analysis), Usher Syndrome (the most severe form of retinitis pigmentosa, which includes an early or congenital loss of hearing along with blindness), and Gene Therapy. In addition, the section on Basic Science Related to Retinal Degeneration is particularly strong with several laboratories reporting on new discoveries in the area of outer segment phagocytosis, a key component of photoreceptor-retinal pigment epithelial cell interactions in normal and degenerating retinas.

Book excerpt: Networked systems are all around us. The accumulated evidence of systems as complex as a cell cannot be fully understood by studying only their isolated constituents, giving rise to a new area of interest in research ? the study of complex networks. In a broad sense, biological networks have been one of the most studied networks, and the field has benefited from many important contributions. By understanding and modeling the structure of a biological network, a better perception of its dynamical and functional behavior is to be expected. This unique book compiles the most relevant results and novel insights provided by network theory in the biological sciences, ranging from the structure and dynamics of the brain to cellular and protein networks and to population-level biology.

Book excerpt: Mathematical Morphology in Geomorphology and GISci presents a multitude of mathematical morphological approaches for processing and analyzing digital images in quantitative geomorphology and geographic information science (GISci). Covering many interdisciplinary applications, the book explains how to use mathematical morphology not only to perform quantitative morphologic and scaling analyses of terrestrial phenomena and processes, but also to deal with challenges encountered in quantitative spatial reasoning studies. For understanding the spatiotemporal characteristics of terrestrial phenomena and processes, the author provides morphological approaches and algorithms to: Retrieve unique geomorphologic networks and certain terrestrial features Analyze various geomorphological phenomena and processes via a host of scaling laws and the scale-invariant but shape-dependent indices Simulate the fractal-skeletal-based channel network model and the behavioral phases of geomorphologic systems based on the interplay between numeric and graphic analyses Detect strategically significant sets and directional relationships via quantitative spatial reasoning Visualize spatiotemporal behavior and generate contiguous maps via spatial interpolation Incorporating peer-reviewed content, this book offers simple explanations that enable readers—even those with no background in mathematical morphology—to understand the material. It also includes easy-to-follow equations and many helpful illustrations that encourage readers to implement the ideas.

Book excerpt: With a variety of detection chemistries, an increasing number of platforms, multiple choices for analytical methods and the jargon emerging along with these developments, real-time PCR is facing the risk of becoming an intimidating method, especially for beginners. Real-time PCR provides the basics, explains how they are exploited to run a real-time PCR assay, how the assays are run and where these assays are informative in real life. It addresses the most practical aspects of the techniques with the emphasis on 'how to do it in the laboratory'. Keeping with the spirit of the Advanced Methods Series, most chapters provide an experimental protocol as an example of a specific assay.

Book excerpt: The Seventh Australasian Conference in Information Security and Privacy (ACISP) was held in Melbourne, 3–5July, 2002. The conference was sponsored by Deakin University and iCORE, Alberta, Canada and the Australian Com- ter Society. The aims of the annual ACISP conferences have been to bring together people working in di?erent areas of computer, communication, and information security from universities, industry, and government institutions. The conferences give the participants the opportunity to discuss the latest developments in the rapidly growing area of information security and privacy. The reviewing process took six weeks and we heartily thank all the m- bers of the program committee and the external referees for the many hours of valuable time given to the conference. The program committee accepted 36 papers from the 94 submitted. From those papers accepted 10 papers were from Australia, 5each from Korea and USA, 4 each from Singapore and Germany, 2 from Japan, and 1 each from The Netherlands, UK, Spain, Bulgaria, and India. The authors of every paper, whether accepted or not, made a valued contribution to the conference. In addition to the contributed papers, we were delighted to have presen- tions from the Victorian Privacy Commissioner, Paul Chadwick, and eminent researchers Professor Hugh Williams, Calgary, Canada, Professor Bimal Roy, ISI, Kolkota, India (whose invited talk was formally referred and accepted by the program committee), and Dr Hank Wolfe from Otago, New Zealand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective identification of patients at increased risk of malignant cardiac arrhythmia presently represents a clinically important unmet need. Existing guidelines for the selection of candidates for the prophylactic implantation of cardioverters-defibrillators (ICD) are based solely on the reduction of ventricular haemodynamic performance. Although this guidance is based on statistical results of previously conducted randomized clinical trials, available experience shows that it does not serve clinical needs efficiently. The majority of patients who are implanted with ICDs for prophylactic reasons never utilize the device during its technical longevity whilst, at the same time, many patients who succumb to sudden cardiac death do not have ventricular haemodynamic performance particularly compromised. Recent results also showed that the previous statistical findings of ICD efficacy are not fully reproducible in patients with non-ischemic heart disease and that the reduction of sudden cardiac death after myocardial infarction by external automatic defibrillation vests is lower than expected. Advances in cardiac electrophysiology are needed for better understanding of the mechanisms that are the basis of different arrhythmic abnormalities. Increased understanding of these mechanisms will allow them to be more effectively classified so that optimum therapeutic options can be offered. Likewise, better understanding of the underlying electrophysiology processes is needed so that novel and more focused randomized clinical trials can be designed. Compared to invasive electrophysiological studies, noninvasive cardiac electrophysiology offers the possibility of screening larger number of patients as well as healthy subjects investigated under different provocations and conditions. To advance the field, broad spectrum of studies is needed together with meta-analyses and reviews facilitating research interactions.
