Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas and oil are pivotal to the functioning of modern societies, yet the ownership, control, production and consumption of hydrocarbons often provokes intense disputes with serious ramifications. Gas, oil and the Irish state examines the dynamics and conflicts of state hydrocarbon management and provides the first comprehensive study of the Irish model. Interpreting the Corrib gas conflict as a microcosm of the Irish state's approach to hydrocarbon management, the book articulates environmental, health and safety concerns underpinning community resistance to the project. It emphasises how the dispute exposed broader issues, such as the privatisation of Irish hydrocarbons in exchange for one of the lowest rates of government take in the world, and served to problematise how the state functions, its close relationship with capital and its deployment of coercive force to repress dissent. Analysis of these issues occurs within an original account of decision-making and policy formation around Irish hydrocarbons from 1957 to 2014. The book traces the development of the state's approach in tandem with occurrences in Irish political economy and examines the impact of global trends on different approaches to hydrocarbon management. A comparative case study of Norway reveals ideological, political, social and economic forces which influence how states manage their hydrocarbons - factors which the book uses as the basis for a rigorous critique of the Irish model.

Book excerpt: Bill Kelly survived a tough childhood in Dublin to become one of Ireland’s foremost journalists, perhaps best known for his Sunday Press soccer column as ‘Big Bill’ which was so popular it ran for thirty years. Here, with the sure touch of a born storyteller, he takes us back to his tenement boyhood in a time when ‘discos, television, even the wireless were in the realm of science fiction’ and water wings were made from two paraffin-oil tins and a piece of twine. Then he leads us onward through his extraordinary and varied life – his Catholic schooling where the nuns left him ‘in no doubt that hell was a terribly real place and damn few escaped it’ – his debut boxing event as a pro under an assumed name ‘for a fiver for three rounds’ – his introduction to journalism in the newsroom of Radio Éireann in 1946 – his brief career in PR when he represented the great boxer Jack Doyle – how he ‘rescued Kippure’ with the Irish Parachute Club – his boozing sessions with Brendan Behan and so much more. Big Bill’s love of his native city shines through every word but it is his own exuberant and humorous take on life that makes this such a memorable read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book explores two centuries of suburban growth as integral to global urbanism. It argues that the future of an urbanizing world will be a suburban world and presents suburbs as places that are interesting and viable on their own terms rather than simply poor cousins of big cities. Examples come from every peopled continent, offering glimpses of suburbs from London to Lima, Sao Paolo to Singapore, Cairo to Chicago, and Dublin to Delhi. The approach is both historical and thematic. The book first traces the history of suburban development in England and North America to 1940 and then examines three different trajectories of suburbanization in more recent decades. The United States and other nations drawing on British planning traditions have built low density suburbia characterized by owner-occupied housing, dependence on automobiles, planned new towns, and a legacy of racial residential segregations. High-rise housing built by national governments dominated suburban rings in Eastern Europe and parts of Western Europe and East Asia. Where neither government nor private market has been able to meet demand, residents have acted themselves to create informal communities with self-built housing on cheap peripheral land, sometimes misleadingly called shantytowns. After this world tour, a chapter explores suburban rings as places of work, from early dispersed manufacturing and industrial suburbs to research and development suburbs in developed economies about the world. Another thematic chapter examines the negative and even dystopian reputation of suburbs and sprawl in literature, popular media, and science fiction"--

Organized along the lines of the above categories, topics include the Irish imitation of Britain's Great Exhibition of 1851, the level of support that the Young Ireland movement hoped to receive from Germany in their bid for national independence in the 1840s, the rise of literary regionalisms, and the relationship of land distribution to regional concerns. Book excerpt: An “intriguing . . . skillfully told” Irish historical romance with a mystical Celtic twist from the award–winning author (Chattanooga News-Free Press). “You are the guardian of this ring, my son, and upon your shoulders the burden of it falls.” The ring bears the fateful sign of the serpent, and ancient Celtic legend decrees that every Trevallyan heir must wed the woman who possesses an identical ring. The orphaned granddaughter of a woman blessed with the gift of second sight, Ravenna grows to womanhood amid dark rumors about Lord Niall Trevallyan. Drawn against her will to the brooding aristocrat, Ravenna vows to marry only for love, unaware that her destiny and Lord Trevallyan’s are inextricably linked. Born on the night of the Druid feast—the most magical time of the Celtic year—Niall must pay the price for the lands his family ruled, or tragedy will befall him and his descendants. Now the woman he has sworn never to love is the one he must wed. But first he will have to win her heart.

Book excerpt: Part I of this book is a repeat of Land Above and Part II continues the saga. In arriving to the Carolinas in the late 1700s, the McLean family worked hard, raised family, and thanked their fortune in finding a good life in a new land. Benjamin, knowing the pain of loss in his earlier life in Northern Ireland, regained love and wealth and became blessed with a large extended family life. When his son, Joseph and family, were feared lost at sea, the pain came flowing back; surely he could not lose this important part of himself. (Perhaps as before someone else can write better than I for the jacket of these books).
