Book excerpt: Many 21st century men have been raised by women - without a masculine role model - and what they've learned about being a man has been defined by their mothers, wives, and outdated or distorted concepts from the 20th century feminist movement. As is the case for both men and women, without a strong masculine image our souls become fragmented and we lose our way. When we are in such a state of confusion and imbalance, we must begin again to search for the Holy Grail. The Grail is the symbolic container of the psycho-spiritual contents that can nourish, balance, and renew our lives. In Resurrecting the Unicorn, Bud Harris guides us deep into the realm of metaphors where we can examine the evolution and development of human consciousness and reclaim discarded, yet much needed, aspects of our humanity.

Book excerpt: A New Understanding of Fatherhood that Surprises, Heals and Inspires. Fatherhood itself is a life of its own. It carries the great responsibility of raising children with the right values, giving them the best education and implementing a code of morality into their lives. In addition, the father himself must be dedicated to his moral duties for the rest of his life. These are some of the themes that readers will discover in this Fisher King Press publication. This Father Quest brings to readers an in-depth focus on what being a father is all about. It emphasizes fatherhood in its deepest personal and spiritual meanings and explores the psychological dimensions of fatherhood. The Father Quest goes beyond simple prescriptions and techniques to explain the importance of fatherhood s deeper personal meanings, as well as to culture. Interestingly, it describes the father as being one of the two great pillars of society that shape and support human life from the beginning. The Father Quest explores the critical importance of passion and love as key ingredients of the "spirit of fatherhood." Thanks to its richly-layered content, readers who are struggling to be fathers, as well those who are struggling with their own fathers, will find The Father Quest to be great source of inspiration.

Book excerpt: The year is 1910. Sigmund Freud and his heir-apparent, Carl Jung, are changing the way we think about human nature and the mind. Twenty-two year old Toni Wolff enters the heart of this world as Jung's patient. His wife, Emma Jung, is twenty-six, a mother of four, aspiring to help her husband create the new science of psychology. Toni Wolff's fiercely curious mind, and her devotion to Jung, threaten this aspiration. Despite their passionate rivalry for Jung's mind and heart, the two women often find themselves allied. Born of aristocratic Swiss families, they are denied a university education, and long to establish themselves as analysts in their own right. Passionate and self-educated, they hunger for another intellectual woman with whom to explore the complexities of the soul, the role of women in society, and the archetypal feminine in the affairs of nations.Their relationship spans 40 years, from pre-World War I to the dawn of the Atomic Age. Their story follows the development of the field of psychology, and the moral and professional choices of some of its major players. Ultimately, Toni and Emma discover that their individual development is informed by both their antagonism, and their common ground. They struggle to know the essence of the enemy, the other, and to claim the power and depth of their own nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and C.G. Jung: Side by Side is an anthology written by authors from different backgrounds, sharing how the lives of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and Carl Gustav Jung impacted them personally and/or how they understand the relevance of these two men for our present times. Contributors to this fourth volume of the Fisher King Review include: John Dourley, Peter Dunlap, Barbara Faris, Fred R. Gustafson, John Giannini, Richard W. Hanhardt, Robert Henderson, Steven B. Herrmann, Jane A. Kelley, Jon Magnuson, Francisco (Paco) Martorell, Stan V. McDaniel, Dennis L. Merritt, and Laura A. Weber. Though C.G.Jung and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin never met, their independent intellectual inquiries and courageous researches pushed the personal and collective soul forward and placed both of them at the foreground of needing to understand and integrate on a planetary level the core values of their expansive work. Both Jung and de Chardin were concerned with science and religion and operated within these paradigms. Both of them shook the world by offering up views, on one hand, of the profound depths of the human psyche and, on the other, presenting a profound re-consideration of evolution as a process leading toward a social unification of the planet. One used the concept of individuation, the other spoke of evolution. Each took these concepts to a creative depth so much so that the world they lived in either deeply admired or detested them. Both had conflicts in their chosen fields. Jung was a psychologist who used the field of science to explore the religious depths of the human soul by studying mythology, world religions, folk tales, dreams, and human behavior. Chardin used the ground of religion to work in the field of science via paleontology, geology, and physics as he explored a deeper and relevant understanding of evolution. Though each began from different intellectual platforms, they each crisscrossed into the other’s territory of inquiry and related their ideas to include the full scope of humanity. One went deeply into soul and found matter, whereas, the other went deeply into matter and found soul. In their own ways both spent their careers trying to heal the split between spirit and matter in the weltanschauung of their times reflected in the human psyche and in the general religious views permeating most of Western culture.

Book excerpt: This life is the way, the long sought after way to the unfathomable which we call divine.—The Red Book Marked by Fire: Stories of the Jungian Way is a collection that includes and illuminates the inner life. When Soul appeared to C.G. Jung and demanded he change his life, he opened himself to the powerful forces of the unconscious. He recorded his inner journey, his conversations with figures that appeared to him in vision and in dream in The Red Book. Although it would be years before The Red Book was published, much of what we now know as Jungian psychology began in those pages, when Jung allowed the irrational to assault him. That was a century ago. How do those of us who dedicate ourselves to Jung's psychology as analysts, teachers, writers respond to Soul's demands in our own lives? If we believe, with Jung, in "the reality of the psyche," how does that shape us? The articles in Marked By Fire portray direct experiences of the unconscious; they tell life stories about the fiery process of becoming ourselves. Contributors to this edition of the Fisher King Review include: Jerome Bernstein, Claire Douglas, Gilda Frantz, Jacqueline Gerson, Jean Kirsch, Chie Lee, Karlyn Ward, Henry Abramovitch, Sharon Heath, Dennis Patrick Slatterly, Robert Romanyshyn, Patricia Damery, and Naomi Ruth Lowinsky.

Book excerpt: Originally published by Shambhala in 1993, Gathering the Light is a significant contribution to Jungian psychology and to research concerning the relationship between psychological and spiritual development. Gathering the Light remains a groundbreaking work that integrates Jungian psychology, alchemy, and the practice of meditation. It is one of very few, if not the only Jungian book that demonstrates that the alchemical opus is not only an analogy of the individuation process, but also a depiction of various experiential stages encountered in the course of meditation. Gathering the Light compares Western and Eastern images of the goal of alchemy and of meditation practice; it offers a psychological interpretation of the Zen Ox Herding pictures; it argues that in essence both psychological and spiritual development consists of the withdrawal of projections; and the appendix offers a critique of Wilber's mistaken view of Jung's conception of archetypes and provides a critical review of Thomas Cleary's translation of The Secret of the Golden Flower.

Book excerpt: A sanctuary for the soul—In The Rabbi, the Goddess, and Jung, Naomi Ruth Lowinsky shows us how to create a sacred space by cultivating one’s inner life. Admitting that this is not an easy practice in our hectic, fearful times, she demonstrates how the word from within orients—whether it comes as gift or disturbance, guest or ghost, riddle or revelation. It may force a confrontation with one’s worst fears. It may visit in nightmare images, such as the enormous spider with hairy legs and eight baleful eyes that appeared in a dream, come to warn, it would seem, of the perils facing human nature and Mother Nature. It is essential, especially in difficult times, to make space for what the Kabbalah calls “the beyond that lies within”—the still small voice of the Self, the long view of the wisdom traditions. In this collection of poetic, visionary essays, Lowinsky tells stories of the Lady Tree who showed up when she was six, and has wandered in and out of her life, revealing her Goddess nature. Active imagination enables her to work out unfinished business with ancestors including her father and Jung. Dreams introduce her to her spirit guides, and to a dancing rabbi who insists she study Kabbalah. And that scary spider turns out to be Grandmother Spider, a creator goddess who has the power, if we recognize Her, to help us reweave our relationship with earth.

Book excerpt: Jungian Child Analysis brings together ten certified Child & Adolescent Analysts (IAAP) to discuss how healing with children occurs within the analytical framework. While the majority of Jung’s corpus centered on the collective aspects of the adult psyche, one can find in Jung’s earliest work clinical observations and ideas that reflect an uncanny prescience of the psychological research that would later emerge regarding the self and the mother-infant relationship. This book discusses and illustrates in very practical ways how one uses an analytical attitude and works with the symbolic: this includes illustrations of analytical play therapy, dream analysis, sandplay, work with special populations and work with the parents and families of the child. Not only will the book capture your interest and further your development in working with children and adolescents, but also will enhance your work with adults. Jungian Child Analysis, edited by Audrey Punnett; foreword by Wanda Grosso; contributors include Margo M. Leahy, Liza J. Ravitz, Brian Feldman, Lauren Cunningham, Patricia L. Speier, Maria Ellen Chiaia, Audrey Punnett, Susan Williams, Robert Tyminski, and Steve Zemmelman.

Book excerpt: How is a well meaning mother to protect her daughter from a culture where the birth of a baby girl is met with despair because the only future open to her is that of sexual assault and teenage pregnancy, which would doom her to a life of illiteracy and poverty as it has doomed her lineage before her? Genital mutilation has many causes but at the root of all of them is fear. A fear that pushes a mother to do the unthinkable to a daughter that she loves? What does a scapegoat do with the fate she has been handed? Accept it and roll with it, or reject it? How is she to reject it when the acceptance of her role is needed for her culture's psychic equilibrium? In the theater of the mind where all springs forth, is there such a thing as an innocent victim, and a victimizer? Feasts of Phantoms is a novel that explores of all of these questions.

Book excerpt: Among the 19th century poets, Emily Dickinson is by far the most scientifically minded. Science is the voice that summoned Dickinson at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary and gave her unique distinction as a poetess of botanical and entomological and astronomical classifications. Like no other 19th century poet she forms an integration between science and spirituality. She studied at Holyoke at the exact historical moment of the first Seneca Falls Women’s Rights Convention in 1848. This, therefore, is a feminist book. It speaks up for the Divine Feminine. On the front cover purple-white rosemary blossoms are exploding with color. Emily Dickinson’s garden was a place where butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds drank up the radiance of flowers. Rosemary in particular was one of her favorite healing herbs. C.G. Jung mentions the antitoxin of rosemary flowers as a synonym for the Self, the total personality. When Steven Herrmann refers to Emily Dickinson as a Medicine Woman, he is speaking of an archetype of healing within all humans. Her poems are enduring imprints of the Medicine Woman archetype. It is by access to the Medicine Woman archetype that she’s able to espouse a democracy of equality that the world needs right now. She advises women to cherish “Power” and take heed from the Serpent. We need a Medicine Woman to balance things out. In a democratic sense, she’s a fierce and uncompromising spokeswoman for Liberty. She is a dispenser of a new American myth for our times.
