Under the duress of history the poet, who is torn between lamentation and celebration, seeks to achieve distance from his troubled times. Add to this a deep love for and commitment to the Irish and English poetic traditions, and a strong desire to search for models outside his culture, and you have the poetry of the Irish Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney (1939-). In this study, Carmen Bugan looks at how the poetry of Seamus Heaney, born of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, has encountered the'historically-tested imaginations' of Czeslaw Milosz, Joseph Brodsky, Osip Mandelstam, and Zbigniew Herbert, as he aimed to fulfil a Horatian poetics, a poetry meant to both instruct and delight its readers. Carmen Bugan is the author of a collection of poems, Crossing the Carpathians, and a memoir, Burying the Typewriter."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Translation and Politics presents the first comprehensive, state of the art overview of the multiple ways in which ‘politics’ and ‘translation’ interact. Divided into four sections with thirty-three chapters written by a roster of international scholars, this handbook covers the translation of political ideas, the effects of political structures on translation and interpreting, the politics of translation and an array of case studies that range from the Classical Mediterranean to contemporary China. Considering established topics such as censorship, gender, translation under fascism, translators and interpreters at war, as well as emerging topics such as translation and development, the politics of localization, translation and interpreting in democratic movements, and the politics of translating popular music, the handbook offers a global and interdisciplinary introduction to the intersections between translation and interpreting studies and politics. With a substantial introduction and extensive bibliographies, this handbook is an indispensable resource for students and researchers of translation theory, politics and related areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This volume analyzes problems crucial to the science of practical translation. Among the many aspects which are important for the adequacy and correctness in translation and interpreting services, two areas were chosen - terminology as a firm base for translation equivalence and discourse as a procedural foundation for a successful translation process. The theoretical basis and methods which were used during the analysis are the ones which form the linguistic and translation discourse analysis. It presents translation and interpreting as a goal-oriented communication procedure, which is closely related to diverse forms of intercommunication. A characteristic feature of translation discourse analysis is that the object of the study is documented very closely with the terminology as a corpus of different specialized texts. Such an empirical base for the analysis takes into consideration the most significant approaches of translation and interpreting - from legal terminology to cultural aspects of the translation process.

Book excerpt: Dealing with the most translated work of German literature, the Tales of the brothers Grimm (1812-1815), this book discusses their history, notably in relation to Denmark and subsequently other nations from 1816 to 1986. The Danish intelligentsia responded enthusiastically to the tales and some were immediately translated into Danish by a nobleman and by the foremost Romantic poet. Their renditions remained in print for a century and embued the tales with high prestige. This book discusses translators, approaches, and other parameters such as copyright, and changes in target audiences. The tales’ social acceptability inspired Hans Christian Andersen to write his celebrated fairytales. Combined, the Grimm and Andersen tales came to constitute the ‘international fairytale’.This genre was born in processes of translation and, today, it is rooted more firmly in the world of translation than in national literatures. This book thus addresses issues of interest to literary, cross-cultural studies and translation.

Book excerpt: Machine translation has become increasingly popular, especially with the introduction of neural machine translation in major online translation systems. However, despite the rapid advances in machine translation, the role of a human translator remains crucial. As illustrated by the chapters in this book, man-machine interaction is essential in machine translation, localisation, terminology management, and crowdsourcing translation. In fact, the importance of a human translator before, during, and after machine processing, cannot be overemphasised as human intervention is the best way to ensure the translation quality of machine translation. This volume explores the role of a human translator in machine translation from various perspectives, affording a comprehensive look at this topical research area. This book is essential reading for anyone involved in translation studies, machine translation or interested in translation technology.

This book is dedicated to her as an expression of the gratitude and respect her students, colleagues, and fellow researchers feel for all her work and devotion. The studies in this volume draw on recent research, presenting arguments for promising new directions in theory and analysis of translation studies. Part One of this book includes contributions related directly to the theory of translation. Part Two contains studies that focus on the analysis of particular translations where the languages are English, Finnish, Russian, French and Hungarian. The main topics related to the theory of translation center around the models and paradigms of translation studies, translation strategies, typology, the notion of equivalence, explication, issues of terminology, and translator training.
