Book excerpt: Leeds House is a post-Empire horror novel about the millennial generation. The question this novel answers is, "How do you scare a group of kids who have already seen everything on the internet?" T/James Reagan, after satirizing celebrities and the fashion industry, moves on to the horror genre for his most twisted novel yet. In Leeds House, members of the metalcore band "Lies As Language" end up in New Jersey's Pine Barrens, where they're confronted with every millennial's ultimate fear... being held accountable for their own actions. With no one else to blame, each character is forced to pay the debts they've accrued through their selfish, narcissistic decisions. Drawing inspiration from sources like Eastbound & Down and The Evil Dead, the novel aggressively explores such topics as Christianity, homosexuality, and the crumbling music business. Filled with offensive humor, VHS horror movie nostalgia, and a story that demands you become part of the journey, Reagan's novel offers a unique experience for those readers willing to step inside Leeds House.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sibundoy valley of southwestern Colombia is the home of a unique Indian culture—one that blends Incan elements with those of the aboriginal natives. Moreover, Sibundoy bridges two domains, the Andean highlands and the Amazonian basin, and inter-mixed with all of these elements are European influences, particularly folk and orthodox Catholicism. From this cultural enclave, John McDowell presents here a body of oral material collected from the Santiago Ingano community. This corpus of material is made up of some 200 "sayings of the ancestors," proverb-like statements, many concerned with dreams and the forecasting of future events. From an analysis of these sayings emerges a cosmological view of the Sibundoy Indians, a glimpse of their spiritual world. It is a world where spirits constantly impinge on the activities of everyday life. It is a world where the sayings can both warn of spiritual sickness and offer the way to spiritual health. For the Sibundoy the sayings go back to the first people, the "ancestors," who established for all time the models for a proper life. The study of the sayings is rounded out with references to the parallel fields of mythology and folk medicine as these contribute to a clearer understanding of their roles and functions in Sibundoy life. Sayings of the Ancestors provides a fascinating body of original folkloric and ethnographic material from a unique cultural locus. It is also an engrossing demonstration that what seems a miscellaneous group of small beliefs can be seen as the components of a larger world-order. The book and its interpretive findings will be a valuable resource for folklorists, anthropologists, and many Latin Americanists.

This book was released on 2022-07-21 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces social practitioners - community development workers, social workers, organisational change facilitators, social, ecological, cultural and political activists - to a phenomenological tradition of reflective practice. Critiquing reductionist, linear and ossified thinking in the social and ecological fields, the book offers an exciting new alternative that is honouring of the uncertainty of all living and therefore emergent social processes. Linking phenomenology and Goethe’s ‘delicate empiricism’, the book challenges practitioners to observe and work with living processes. As such, the book charts two stories, two inquiries. One personal and the other social. The first is the personal phenomenological inquiry into the author’s own practice, a search to make sense of the nuanced and subtle practice that he brings to the social world. The second journey is the inquiry into how this social practice, shaped as it is by a confluence of three rivers – dialogue and community, soul and depth psychology, Goethe and ‘delicate activism’, along with other thinkers on ‘observation’ and ‘aliveness’ – can be understood in the context of a wider phenomenological reflective practice. This second journey draws on years of experience and research in Brazil, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and parts of Europe. Presenting a philosophical, personal and practical analysis, it offers a new approach to observation and action, while working with aliveness and complexity within the social and ecological fields. It will be of interest to all scholars and students of social work and community development and particularly courses on social complexity.

Book excerpt: The hardest part about moving on is learning to forgive yourself. When her second tour in Iraq ends in tragedy, Army veteran Sara Randolph returns home to Arkansas a wounded woman. While her physical scars have begun the fade, the emotional ones are as fresh and raw as ever. Because for Sara, the battle still hasn’t ended. She is haunted by the shame of bad choices and naivety, by the memory of her dead squadmates, and by the guilt for having caused the ambush that got them all killed. Diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, home is where she hopes to heal, but even her father, a Vietnam War vet, can’t find the right words to help her. In an effort to push through the trauma and find a new normal, Sara returns to the one place that feels right—the White River, where she grew up fishing. It’s here that she finds peace, as well as Arkansas Conservation Officer Luke Matthews, who could be the key to opening her heart. It’s also where she finds an abandoned young runaway who seems to understand her struggles better than anyone. As Sara holds on to her sanity with all her strength, she’s faced with more adversity—bullies who don’t appreciate a woman on a man’s river and the small-town Arkansas version of a drug kingpin who thinks her military training might benefit his criminal operation. They all pale in comparison to the most vicious enemy of all, though—herself. Between the flashbacks, the nightmares, and her own horrific self doubt, every step forward comes with two steps back. Can she come to terms with the past and forgive herself? Or will the memory of her dead comrades drive her to the one place she can never return from?

Book excerpt: Urban Mountain Beings is an ethnographic and historically grounded study of recognition strategies and ethnogenesis carried out on the flanks of Mt. Pichincha in Quito, Ecuador. Kathleen S. Fine-Dare employs feminist geographical and Indigenous pedagogical frameworks to illustrate how histories of exclusion have created attitudes and policies that treat Native peoples as “out of place and time” in cities. Fine-Dare concentrates on two overlapping contexts for Indigenous vindication: the Yumbada of Cotocollao, an ancestral performance through which mountain and other spirits are called into the urban plaza; and Casa Kinde (Hummingbird House), a cultural organization that engages in workshops, filmmaking, photography, commerce, community education, and the formation of alliances with anthropologists, activists, filmmakers, engineers, and teachers.

Book excerpt: Novel Ideas provides a substantial introduction to the elements of fiction followed by in-depth interviews with successful novelists who speak with candor and insight into the complex process by which a novel is made. This edition includes new and updated interviews as well as writing exercises to enhance its use in the writing classroom. Dorothy Allison recalls "deliciously self-indulgent" days of writing in her bathrobe, wrapped in misery and exultation; Peter Cameron explains how he made the move from short fiction to the novel with the aid of a music composer's notebook to track the movement of his characters. Writers as different as Ha Jin, Jill McCorkle, Richard Ford, and Michael Chabon describe their unique approaches to their work while consistently affirming the necessity of committing to the hard effort of it while also remaining open to surprise. Aspiring novelists will find hands-on strategies for beginning, working through, and revising a novel; accomplished novelists will discover new ways to solve the problems they face in process; and serious readers of contemporary fiction will enjoy a glimpse into the way novels are made. Book excerpt: From pine forest to desert scrub, from alpine meadow to riparian wetland, Albuquerque and its surrounding area in New Mexico offer an appealing variety of wildlife habitat. Birders are likely to see more than two hundred species during a typical year of bird-watching. Now, two experienced birders, Judith Liddell and Barbara Hussey, share their intimate knowledge of the best places to find birds in and around this important region. Covering the Rio Grande corridor, the Sandia and Manzano Mountains, Petroglyph National Monument, and the preserved areas and wetlands south of Albuquerque (including crane and waterfowl haven Bosque del Apache), Birding Hotspots of Central New Mexico offers twenty-nine geographically organized site descriptions, including maps and photographs, trail diagrams, and images of some of the birds and scenery birders will enjoy. Along with a general description of each area, the authors list target birds; explain where and when to look for them; give driving directions; provide information about public transportation, parking, fees, restrooms, food, and lodging; and give tips on availability of water and picnic facilities and on the presence of hazards such as rattlesnakes, bears, and poison ivy. The book includes a “helpful information” section that discusses weather, altitude, safety, transportation, and other local birding resources. The American Birding Association’s code of birding ethics appears in the back of the book, along with an annotated checklist of 222 bird species seen with some regularity in and around Albuquerque. Book excerpt: These essays by linguists, folklorists, anthropologists, literary theorists, and poets, bring to a new level of sophistication the structural analysis of Native American literary expression. Their common concern is for the appreciation and elucidation of Native American song and story, and for a historical, philosophical, psychoanalytic, and linguistic kind of commentary. The essays address the overlapping issues of presentation and interpretation of Native American literature: How to present in writing an art that is primarily oral, dramatic, and performative? How to interpret that art, both in its traditional forms and in its later, written forms. ISBN 0-520-05790-2: $60.00.
