Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the loveliest works of Archaic art were the Athenian korai—sculptures of beautiful young women presenting offerings to the goddess Athena that stood on the Acropolis. Sculpted in the sixth and early fifth centuries B.C., they served as votives until Persians sacked the citadel in 480/79 B.C. Subsequently, they were buried as a group and forgotten for nearly twenty-four centuries, until archaeologists excavated them in the 1880s. Today, they are among the treasures of the Acropolis Museum. Mary Stieber takes a fresh look at the Attic korai in this book. Challenging the longstanding view that the sculptures are generic female images, she persuasively argues that they are instead highly individualized, mimetically realistic representations of Archaic young women, perhaps even portraits of real people. Marshalling a wide array of visual and literary evidence to support her claims, she shows that while the korai lack the naturalism that characterizes later Classical art, they display a wealth and realism of detail that makes it impossible to view them as generic, idealized images. This iconoclastic interpretation of the Attic korai adds a new dimension to our understanding of Archaic art and to the distinction between realism and naturalism in the art of all periods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite attracting the admiration of Modernists like Nabokov and Borges, Stevenson remains for many an apologist for the lost world of the romance. This is not only to misread and simplify his fiction, it is greatly to undervalue his lively, forward-looking literary essays. Strenously resisting the authority of the literary 'fathers' (though haunted by the complexities of paternity), Stevenson reveals strong affinities with emergent Modernism. It is from this perspective that Alan Sandison's latest book (the first to appear for nearly thirty years) conducts a lively and readable re-examination of this often underrated writer.

Book excerpt: William and Beatrice Hampston gladly welcome nine-year-old Russell Hendrix into their home in Nelson, British Columbia, in December of 1945. This older, childless couple enjoys the company of this orphaned boy who had been hiding in their barn. The Hampstons and the townspeople soon realize that Russell is an extraordinary child. He intimately knows the details of the Bible and of the life of Jesus Christ. Russell is popular with both the students at school and the adults in the community as they believe in his mission as a young preacher of the good word. When Russell resurrects his friend Lawrence from death, people suspect that he is Jesus Christ returned to earth as a small child. But Russell doesn't think he is Jesus, and he doesn't want to be Jesus. As he grows older, he faces enormous problems because many continue to pray to him despite Russell's insistence that he isn't Jesus Christ. The matter is laid to rest when sixteen-year-old Russell goes missing. Years later, the Vatican investigates whether or not the boy really was Jesus Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eighteenth-century fiction holds an unusual place in the history of modern print culture. The novel gained prominence largely because of advances in publishing, but, as a popular genre, it also helped shape those very developments. Authors in the period manipulated the appearance of the page and print technology more deliberately than has been supposed, prompting new forms of reception among readers. Christopher Flint's book explores works by both obscure 'scribblers' and canonical figures, such as Swift, Haywood, Defoe, Richardson, Sterne and Austen, that interrogated the complex interactions between the book's material aspects and its producers and consumers. Flint links historical shifts in how authors addressed their profession to how books were manufactured and how readers consumed texts. He argues that writers exploited typographic media to augment other crucial developments in prose fiction, from formal realism and free indirect discourse to accounts of how 'the novel' defined itself as a genre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plotinus (c.205-70) was a Neoplatonist philosopher, his work posthumously published by Porphyry and divided into six books, nine tractates each, called the Enneads. In this book Majumdar makes a valuable addition to the literature on his work, especially Ennead III.7(45)11-13 - in particular explaining Plotinus' cosmology using the genus-species model of soul, coordinating the literature on the appearance of time and the cosmos with that on the larger issue of Plotinian "emanation" and examining the role of tolma and the restless nature of soul in this conjoint appearance. This book investigates Plotinian "emanation," its laws of poiesis (contemplative making ) and the roles of nature, matter, logos, (rational formative principle) and contemplation and highlights the subtler details of Plotinus' cosmology by disentangling conceptual issues about the nature of soul and self ("we") and their impact on the process of generation of time and the cosmos.
